Why we do it

Good journalism isn’t just about the story. It’s about the conversations that it inspires and the connections it makes.

Many of our subscribers support our work not only because they enjoy reading our stories — although, we hope they do! — but also because they want to see thoughtful, engaging reporting on environmental issues exist in the world at large. They want other people to see our stories, too — to spark conversation, connection, and questions.

To make that possible, we do a few things. We co-produce stories with other publications. We manage Local Edition, a program to support community media outlets in covering local environmental stories with reporting and funding partnerships. And we send some of our favorite stories out into the world, on their own, to go start conversations wherever they find a home.

How it works

Climate Confidential publishes monthly issues around a theme; we select the stories as a group and publish new pieces at least once a week. Each month, we also identify the story that we think has the most potential to reach new audiences. We release this story into Creative Commons and make it available on our website. Any images we share here on this site are available for use with attribution, as well, unless otherwise noted.

We also reach out to publishers who we believe might be interested in sharing our work with their audiences. If you’re interested in getting early notification about what stories will be available, drop us an email at team@climateconfidential.com and we’d be happy to keep you in the loop!

FAQ

Who’s published your stories?

Lots of people! The Atlantic, Scientific American, Smithsonian, Ensia, Quartz, The Magazine, Pacific StandardGreenBiz, Conservation, and many more.

Whether you’re a big name brand or a blogger with an audience of two, we’d love to share our work with you.

What stories are available?

You can find a full list of the available stories here.

Can I change the headline?

Yes, but we ask that you keep it accurate and factual. If we see something that is misleading or inaccurate, we might drop you an email.

Can I run an excerpt?

Yes, but we ask that you email us first at team@climateconfidential.com with the excerpt you’d like to run. We’re looking for excerpts that honor the spirit of the story and seek to include the multiple perspectives that our reporters work hard to include.

How do you fund this work?

Climate Confidential is entirely reader-supported. We have also received additional contributions ($300-$5,000) from a group of passionate individuals who joined us as launch sponsors back in March 2014. Their funding enabled us to launch our Creative Commons initiative, and we welcome the support of others who would like to help us continue it.

To help make independent environmental journalism available across the web, subscribe to Climate Confidential or get in touch for information about sponsorship opportunities. You can reach us at team@climateconfidential.com or call Josie Garthwaite at 415-323-0239.
